Rhinoplasty or nose surgery is one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery.
It is used to:
WHY THIS PROCEDURE??
The size or shape of a person’s nose can cause problems not only at an aesthetic level but also health problems. The aim of this procedure is to achieve a nose that is harmonious in shape and size as well as proportional to the face. In some cases it can be associated with surgery on the nasal septum (septoplasty).
Rhinoplasty is one of the procedures most requested by our patients under 30 years of age, although it can be carried out at any age.
TECHNIQUES USED
Rhinoplasties can be performed using two different techniques: in the conventional and most common approach, the operation is done from inside the nose through a simple incision inside the nostrils so as not to leave any visible scar. In more complex cases, it is possible to opt for an open procedure in which the skin is lifted away through an incision in the vertical tissue and separated from the underlying bony and cartilaginous structure, which is then sculpted into the desired shape. This method allows a more foreseeable result to be achieved than with the closed technique.
After the procedure, the surgeon applies an external ferule or “splint” to support the bone structure that has just been rebuilt, in other words to keep the nose in the desired position during the consolidation process. Similarly, nasal plugs or soft plastic ferules are ed to stabilize the septum (the wall creating the division between the two nostrils).
About a week later, sometimes two, all the dressings, ferules and stitches are removed.
ANAESTHESIA
At Clínica Londres we seek not only the best results in our treatments through an adequate indication from the plastic surgeon, but also the maximum safety with a personalized evaluation by the anaesthesiologist the day before surgery. During the procedure, our anaesthesiologist will take care of your safety and comfort at all times. Your health comes first.
Rhinoplasty is generally done as an ambulatory procedure, in other words without admission to hospital, and under general anaesthesia to keep your respiratory under control, although in some less complex cases (e.g. the tip of the nose), it would be possible to use only local anaesthesia plus sedation. In this case, patients remain totally relaxed and insensitive to pain throughout the procedure.
DURATION OF THE OPERATION
The procedure lasts around an hour, although the time may vary depending on the kind of anatomy to be corrected.
RECOVERY
After surgery, particularly during the first 24 hours, the patient will feel some mild discomfort in the area and will have swelling and bruises on the face, especially around the eyes.
To alleviate these effects, your surgeon will give you some instructions for the post-operative period, such as taking sedatives and anti-inflammatory drugs. These signs to disappear after a few days.
People operated on can resume their normal activities once the ferule has been removed, but even so they should avoid any violent physical exercise for at least 2 months. They should also avoid all kinds of thermal insults (excessive cold, heat, or strong exposure to the sun) as these would make the nose swell up excessively.
WILL ANY MARKS BE VISIBLE?
When the procedure is performed through an incision inside the nostrils, the scar that remains is also internal, so it is not at all visible to the naked eye, and is hard to notice after a few weeks.
RESULTS
Although the result of the operation can be seen immediately, the definitive outcome is not obtained until several months later, as there is some inflammation in the nose during this period and it only diminishes gradually.
