Breast Reduction Mammoplasty
Reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction) is a technique for remodelling large breasts to reduce their size and weight. It improves the breast’s aesthetics and takes a load off the spine and the shoulders.
It is a particularly gratifying surgery as, after the procedure, the aesthetics of the breast is substantially improved and immediate relief is noted in the strain due to excess weight.
WHY THIS PROCEDURE?
This is a procedure that, generally speaking, is used to deal with two types of needs: an aesthetic one, as excessively large breasts improve in appearance following reduction, and another for health reasons, improving discomfort in the back through the release of the excess weight.
TECHNIQUES USED FOR BREAST REDUCTION
The surgical technique to be used depends on the volume to be reduced, the skin around the breast and the initial position of the areola and nipple.
Whenever possible, the incision is minimal and is disguised around the areola and a vertical incision or in the form of an inverted ‘T’ (starting from the areola), depending on the individual case.
This procedure is not only limited to reducing breasts, they can also be evened up and given a natural aesthetic shape. For this reason it is a procedure that lasts a little longer than other plastic surgery techniques.
DURATION OF THE OPERATION
The procedure lasts between two and three hours, varying depending on the person’s morphology and the technique used.
WILL ANY MARKS BE VISIBLE?
The incision is always as small as possible. On the edge of the areola it is disguised by the folds inherent to the tissue and the colour changes in only a few months; in vertical or inverted ‘T’ incisions, trace minimization techniques specific to cosmetic surgery are used to make the scar humanize (become narrow and take on the colour of the rest of the adjacent skin) within a period of around six months to a year.
RESULTS
Breast reduction is effective from the very day of the procedure, but the final result is not consolidated until after a period that varies between three and eight months, the time usually needed by the breast to settle into its definitive shape.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Although this kind of operation has practically no side effects, there may be an occasional case when some kind of repercussion may ensue.
Breastfeeding may be affected, but this is something that cannot be fully predicted.
