Mastopexy (or breast lift) is a technique for the remodelling of sagging breasts, generally the result of pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is a very gratifying surgery as it s the breasts’ aesthetic appearance, giving them back part of their shape and smoothness effectively and comfortably. It can also be accompanied by the placement of prostheses to increase breast volume if necessary.
WHY MASTOPEXY?
It is a procedure allowing the shape and texture of sagging or flaccid breasts to be raised and improved, whether due to a sudden weight loss or one or more pregnancies or breastfeeding.
TECHNIQUES USED FOR BREAST LIFT
The incision is made around the areola. On occasions, when the mastopexy s it, it is also possible to reach the lower mammary sulcus, with a vertical shape or as an inverted ‘T’. It is always possible to perform this procedure accompanied a breast enlargement mammoplasty (see breast enlargement ) in which a prosthesis is ed to increase the volume. This procedure is not limited to lifting breasts, but can be used to even them up and give them a natural aesthetic shape.
DURATION OF THE OPERATION AND ANAESTHESIA
The procedure usually lasts between 90 and 120 minutes, depending on the person’s morphology and the technique used.
The anaesthetic technique is usually general anaesthesia without intubation, which allows surgery to be comfortable without the patient feeling any kind of pain and awakening is speedy and comfortable. Recovery from anaesthesia is very fast, patients usually return home a few hours after the procedure, depending on the type of mastopexy (or breast lift).
WILL ANY MARKS BE VISIBLE?
The incision is always as small as possible. It is made on the edge of the areola and is disguised by the folds inherent to the tissue and the colour changes in only a few months. If the incision is vertical or in the shape of an inverted ‘T’, it remains visible although trace minimization techniques specific to cosmetic surgery are used to make the scar humanize within a period of around six months to a year.
RESULTS OF MASTOPEXY
Breast lift is effective from the very day of the procedure, but the final result is not consolidated until after a period that varies between three and eight months, the time usually needed by the breast to settle into its definitive shape.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Although this kind of operation has practically no side effects, there may be an occasional case when some kind of repercussion may ensue. Breastfeeding of future children is not affected in most cases, depending on the kind of technique used in the mastopexy.
